"This is not the East."
Told from the perspective of the Waffen SS, "Die Runen" explores the corruption of men and the ethics of war. Following a German soldier (Matthew Gangl), the film contrasts his experiences on the Eastern and Western Fronts of World War II and the changing shape of the rules of war. Drawn from historical accounts of the Waffen SS, "Die Runen" challenges the faceless vilification of these elite of the Nazi German military by revealing them as mere men--human, corruptible, and at times even noble. It is a story that--like war itself--delves into the darkest parts of the human experience with stunning narrative and imagery. Winner for "Best Editing" at the 2005 Oil Can Film Festival.
